Google Earth, navigation systems, 3D animation: Geoinformatics is everywhere. This innovative field of study links computer science and geoscience – and prepares students for interesting, highly promising tasks. Geoscientists develop concepts, programmes and software systems. They capture, analyse and visualise ‘space-related data’. Their most important tool is geoinformation systems (GIS). As versatile IT specialists, they have a command of modern information systems and work with database systems and methods of image processing and remote sensing. Using modern programming techniques, they improve the usability and user friendliness of existing GIS – and develop new ones. Students are also taught methods of 3D visualisation, computer graphics and presentation. The course is highly practice-oriented with project weeks and an integrated work placement – and the career prospects are excellent.
